Through the Community Foundation of Louisville, friends and classmates of Susan have created a Scholarship Fund to honor her – awarding recipients who are attending Waggener High School, have overcome significant obstacles in their lives, and show a financial need.

Waggener High School Scholarship Fund, Inspired by Susan Lee Campbell

Description: Susan Lee Campbell was a 1973 graduate of Waggener High School in Louisville, Kentucky, who excelled academically despite significant life and financial obstacles. Her exemplary high school performance won her admission to Wellesley College and then Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, where she was valedictorian. In 1983, Susan died tragically aboard Korean Air Lines Flight 007, which was shot down by the Soviet Union, killing all 269 passengers on board. She was on her final trip to Taiwan to complete a multi-year teaching and research post at Taichung University. Susan’s determination, persistence, and intelligence were an inspiration to her classmates and fellow students, who created this fund in her honor to encourage and support other Waggener High School students who excel despite formidable obstacles.

Eligibility: Graduating seniors from Waggener High School in Louisville, Kentucky; Faced and overcame significant obstacles in their life; Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale); Demonstrated financial need.
